Why More Men Need Time Outside

June is Men's Mental Health Month, a time to bring attention to something many men quietly carry but rarely talk about.

Stress.

Pressure.

Loneliness.

The feeling that you always need to keep going, even when you are running on empty.

Many men have learned to push through difficult seasons without stopping to check in with themselves. They show up for work, provide for their families, support others, and keep moving forward. Yet beneath the surface, many are carrying more than anyone realizes.

That is why this month matters.

And it is one reason we believe more men need time outside.

At Luscious Outdoors Africa, we often see something powerful happen when people step away from their daily routines and spend time in nature. It is not dramatic. It is not a quick fix. It is simply a chance to slow down.

To breathe.

To move.

To reconnect.

In a world that rarely stops, the outdoors offers something many of us are missing: space.

Space away from screens.

Space away from expectations.

Space away from the noise.

When you are standing beside a waterfall, walking through a forest trail, or watching the sun rise over a quiet landscape, something begins to shift. Your attention moves away from everything demanding your energy and returns to the present moment.

You notice the cool morning air.

The sound of leaves moving in the wind.

The steady rhythm of your footsteps.

The rise and fall of your breath.

These small experiences help bring us back to ourselves.

For men who spend much of their lives carrying responsibility, this can be deeply important.

Mental wellbeing is not only about what is happening in our minds. It is also connected to our bodies. Stress often settles into tight shoulders, restless sleep, constant fatigue, and the feeling that we are always switched on.

Movement outdoors creates an opportunity to release some of that tension.

Not through intense workouts or competition.

But through simple, natural movement.

Walking.

Hiking.

Exploring.

Being present.

There is also another part of outdoor wellbeing that deserves more attention: connection.

Many men experience loneliness, even when they are surrounded by people.

Meaningful connection can become harder to find as life gets busier. Conversations often stay on the surface. We talk about work, responsibilities, and plans, but rarely about how we are really doing.

Yet something different happens when people gather outdoors.

A shared hike.

A picnic.

A wellness retreat.

A day spent exploring somewhere new.

These experiences create room for genuine connection without pressure.

At Luscious Outdoors Africa, we have seen strangers become friends on a trail. We have seen people arrive feeling exhausted and leave feeling lighter. Not because their problems disappeared, but because they felt seen, connected, and supported.

Community matters.

Nature matters.

Being able to step away from daily pressures matters.

This Men's Mental Health Month, perhaps the conversation is not only about seeking help when things become difficult. It is also about creating more opportunities for wellbeing before we reach that point.

More opportunities to spend time outside.

More opportunities to move our bodies.

More opportunities to connect with others.

More opportunities to simply be.

The outdoors cannot solve every challenge life brings. Grief, stress, uncertainty, and hardship are all part of being human.

But nature can remind us that we do not have to carry everything alone.

Sometimes healing begins with a walk.

Sometimes it begins with a conversation.

Sometimes it begins with joining a community and realizing that others are carrying similar struggles too.

This Men's Mental Health Month, we invite men to make space for themselves.

To step outside.

To take a breath.

To reconnect with nature, with community, and with their own wellbeing.

Because looking after your mental health is not a sign of weakness.

It is part of living well.

And sometimes the first step is simply getting outside.
